My grandfather always said that his service in WWI was the happiest time of his life. Though he allowed that bayonetting people in the mud (and, perhaps, being bayonetted by people in the mud) was not at all nice. The details are obscure because he never felt like filling any in. I've heard some similar things from participants in the final victory on the European side in WW II (i.e.: parts were not nice at all, and no I'm not going to say any more about it).

At a certain point the word "unexceptionable" is wanted, by the way.
