Some more information on the trade deal thanks to the Wealth of Nation Substack

”US-UK trade deal that was unveiled last week that it was announced barely 12 hours after Sir Keir Starmer had to be hauled away from watching an Arsenal match to take a phone call from Donald Trump. The two leaders then staged a bizarre press event in which the prime minister, interrupting Britain’s VE Day 80th anniversary commemorations, was patched into an Oval Office meeting from a conference room in Birmingham.” Britains Prime Minister is a season ticket holder for years at Arsenal and football (soccer for the US americans) is regarded in some quarters as not as a matter of life and death but more important

Firstly, Starmer's Labour Party is not doing well, as Rachel Reeves' actions as Chancellor of the Exchequer are very much Tory-lite at best. Pre-Thatcher Tories, e.g., Ted Heath, would be to the left of Reeves. The UK economy is not doing well. There have been some serious missteps in some of the party's actions on other issues. Coming up for a year in power, Labour is definitely not fulfilling promises to the electorate. Starmer needed a "win", however fake it was. The Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Reynolds, just keeps saying that this is better than it was a week ago, and that Starmer has "saved the UK car industry". The BBC has fallen for this PR event, apparently with a straight face. Somehow, the details, the need for Congressional approval, are just ignored.

It does help Trump, too. It suggests he is a "master dealmaker". It hints that other countries will make deals just as he has been claiming they already have ("200 countries have made deals" - really?) It distracts from his adminsitration's horrendous dismantling of the US' separation of equal branches of government, pushes the SAVE Act's gutting of welfare into the media shadows, and may just distract from the in-your-face bribery of a new 747 gift (kitted out as Airforce One) for personal use after he leaves the presidency (if he does).

Let us not forget, Trump is a media-savvy person, and his carnie-like"Wizard of Oz" spectacles that keep his name on the front pages is what he craves. He doesn't care about the results. His incompetent hires for key roles can all be blamed and fired for the inevitable failures. The Capo stays on top, even as his lieutenants come and go. There is little point even discussing his administration's "policies". They are garbage across the board. Far more worrying is that both Congress and even SCOTUS are deferent to his whims, with the DOJ supporting him in blatant defiance of the law, let alone justice. Fascism has taken root in this government, and it is sad that there is so little pushback from the opposition, and that so many voters are still cheering him on, although there are some signs that the embers of resistance are glowing brighter.
