Yep! It was remarkable to have managed to write a capital gains tax cut that did not provide incentives to boost investment!

1914 and All That: How much was a result of what we now know to be the bat-shit crazy idea that empires were even marginally beneficial to "metropolitan" countries much less essential their (e.g. Germany's) prosperity?

If you define "civil society" as "those who really run things", then they certainly were not angels then and aren't now.

But while there can be dispute about that, there can hardly be any that the press was wildly irresponsible both times.

“Civil society” is really “those not in the government who can discuss, organize, and effectively pressure it by threatening to mobilize.” It is an interesting concept indeed...
