Wasn't there a drift to totalitarianism of both flavors, Fascism and Communism? The horrors of Fascism and Communism as practiced had not become known in the 1930s and presumably many could ally themselves with either approach depending on preference. We seem to have something similar happening today in the West, although the left political preference is more Socialist rather than Communist, although Communism still has some political influence in parts of southern Europe, e.g. Italy.
