Things that went whizzing by I want to remember: First:If our death rate is 1% of those who got enough of a case to get subsequent immunity, then with 600,000 deaths we have 20% of the total population immune as a result of their previous case. If one-third of those who had the disease also get vaccination, then that lowers the vaccination threshold for herd immunity against Delta to 72% of the total population. There’s a clump of blue-state counties (unfortunately not Los Angeles) that are there or almost there. The gob-smacking thing, of course, is the political divide...
Brad argues that collectivists should study economics; individualists should study sociology. True dat! Econ 101 warps the brain of individualists, and strengthens the brain of collectivists.
But is the problem with the discipline of economics or Econ 101? Should economics and sociology remain independent areas of study at the undergraduate level? Or maybe the sociology department is a better teacher of elementary economics?
Remember: the rabbis did not allow their students to learn Kabbalah until they were 40.
Concerning Ancient Egypt, I have wondered how the society over millennia could have marshaled the economic resources to support what you could call the afterlife industry, but I think part of the answer is that the afterlife industry was a big part of the economy. Like the defense industry for us!
While immunity may be fine when exposed to the same virus, it is not necessarily going to work for new strains. With flu, you have to have a booster to cover the new strains annually. Covid-19 is likely to be no different, especially as the pools of non-vaccinated will be variant factories. I hope that booster shots for Covid will be available later this year with the regular flu shot. It really looks like we will be living with Covid for a long time given that a fraction of the public refuses to get vaccinated and will be hospitalized. Watching the UK may be the best leading indicator of what will happen in the US.
