I’m in the middle of that book. One could say that the country was teetering on the edge of two possible trajectories in that era as were so many other countries were also facing. Big business and government could have won and brought us to fascism as did Italy and Germany. Labor could have won and brought communism to North America. It took 4 special men to guide a path and pivot the government to bring fairness to labor and still encourage capitalism and investment. Hence a middle path was taken which Europe and the Pacific Rim eventually followed to bring us to today.
