Back in the Gilded Age, we had three parties. The Republicans were the party of the wealthy and the smallholder. The Northern Democrats were the party of working folk. The Southern Democrats were the party of Jim Crow. At any time, any two out of three could be in power, which enabled shifting alliances and fundamental reform. This three-party system allowed for much more flexibility than we have today, where we have two parties, of almost equal strength. Put me on the pessimist side.
