Estimated illegal border crossings since 1960; 1984 Apple Macintosh launch commercial; very briefly noted; Matthew Klein on practical nominal GDP growth targeting; surprise! a culture-war thing is...
Reading Freddy deBoer's post makes me wonder what Claude would do with a story where a Ged like character is faced a real external enemy and has to get past his own introspection to fight it? A friend of mine is a veterinarian. There's a saying in vet school, if you hear hooves, think horses not zebras. They had a zebra on the grounds along with the other animals. The zebra, as zebras are, was cantankerous and often broke out of its stall or the corral and went on a zebra rampage. So, while they were taught to think horses not zebras, they learned that when one heard hooves that it was probably that damned zebra.
Kuper: Just looking at the Tax Cuts for the Rich and Deficits Act, PPP, the attempt to repeal ACA, slashing legal immigration, trade wars against our allies is plenty to disqualify Trump from ever holding any elective office again.
Klein: a) I have no idea how he knows what the equilibrium relative price of wages/good & services is. b) I have no idea how the thinks he knows anything about wages. BLS does not publish data on wages.
Tett: A little late to be asking the question, don’t you think?
Still, it’s a good answer, or would be if any politician took it seriously. And if any politician that did want to take it seriously would review their understanding of
1) the Learner theorem: import restrictions (even good, “strategic ones) = export tariffs and
2) (I-S) = (M-X) and that the federal deficit is negative S
And of course, even 1 and 2 can’t help if the incentive is given inefficiently as a subsidy of the amount invested rather than or the externality adjusted value of the output produced.
And why has the NYT that so loves to report on intra-Administration conflicts failed to report on economists fighting to make IRA more efficient and to reform taxes to increase revenue?
So destressing that Biden won the nomination but Warren-Sanders won the Administration.
I fear many will look at the graph on illegal border encounters and only notice the spike in the blue line, not bothering to look at the legend. We need journalists to explain the nationalities, motivations, resources, and results of asylum seekers. Instead, most people still think illegal immigrants are Mexicans sneaking across the Rio Grande.
I think one should conclude that Bident has not sent enough asylum processing agents to the border to quickly resolve (most negatively) the claims and for word to get out that paying lots of money for deportation is a bad investment.
Yes, a breakdown of country of origin would be a big help. The family from China has a better prima facie case for asylum than someone from closer with lower costs.
